What the Bible Says About the Love of Money

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The verse from 1 Timothy above, is one of the most famous Bible verses regarding money, and it is often miss-quoted. Often people will say that “money is the root of all evil” yet this is not what the verse says. The verse says that the “love of money is the root of all kinds of evil”. That is quite a bit different isn’t it? However, this is not the only thing the Bible says about money. The Bible also provides instruction and insight for handling money too. Money is simply a reality of life and something we should not be ashamed of. We should, however, learn to properly handle it by learning the Biblical principles regarding it.
This instruction is central to the concept of contentment. We should be content with what we have and not pursue wealth as an end goal to be obtained. This does not mean that we do not work hard or strive for perfection in what we do, it means that the reason we work hard and strive for perfection is not wealth. We work hard and strive for perfection because we do all things for God, including our work and profession.

We are not to love money. We must not grow attached to money to the point where we trust in our money or wealth or where we regard money higher than God’s laws. We must also learn to apply Biblical principles to our spending habits. This means learning how we should save, how we should tithe and give, how we should handle debt and all of the precepts outlined in the Bible. Like many things in life, money is not in itself bad; instead, how we behave in regards to money can become a stumbling block for us. Read 1 Timothy 6 and strive to understand the instruction found here.
